The Events of May 25, 2020
The death of George Floyd occurred on May 25, 2020, in the Powderhorn neighborhood of the U.S. city of Minneapolis. It began at 8:08 p.m. CDT, when police responded to a report of a counterfeit $20 bill being used at Cup Foods, a grocery store. George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was arrested and restrained by four Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) officers.
After being handcuffed and put in the back of a police car, Floyd was taken to the intersection of Chicago Avenue and 38th Street. There the officers pulled him from the car and held him to the ground. Derek Chauvin, one of the officers, knelt on Floyd's neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe, and eventually became unresponsive.
